  2. Then lead on with what attracts you to the firm. You can use anecdotes or funny stories that you came across with when you were talking to the consultants. Make sure you’re clear on what aspects of the firm attracted you – it could be the Associate-driven culture, specific type of work, the project structures, staffing models, or any externship / office transfer opportunities. The more unique and tailored your rationale is, the better, so make sure you research & ask about specific examples when you network.

The second paragraph should focus on:

  1. Your interest in consulting – why you became interested initially and what aspects of consulting life appeals to you. It could be 1) from university, you’ve enjoyed the problem-solving modules (e.g., business analysis, project management etc) or 2) you like the fact that you get exposure to C-suites from a junior age or 3) you get to experience different industries early on, and even 4) it sets you up for an entrepreneurship journey later down the road. Many candidates will have similar reasons, and it’s okay to not stand out here. Just be clear on the logic around what motivates you to join consulting.

  2. Elaborate on what you’ve done to explore your interest in consulting further. It can be doing an internship, or doing certain projects / extracurriculars that are related to consulting (e.g., LSC or 180 DC), or even attending case competitions and consulting firm-led panel events etc. Then describe what your key takeaway was from your “exploration phase” and what “excites you” the most about joining that specific consulting firm, and why your skillsets are a great fit. If you’re applying to Bain for example, you could say - you’ve done an internship at a boutique consultancy where you worked on due diligence projects and you enjoyed analysing the commercial aspects of an investment deal. Bain is a leader in private equity consulting with its PEG practice, so you’re very excited to join Bain and get involved with larger scale deals across tech & healthcare [or any specific industries that Bain is a leader in].

The last paragraph should focus on:

  1. Last paragraph should be on any other reasons why you would be a great candidate – could be leadership / team-work skills that you’ve developed, or any extracurricular activities you’ve done.
